A Celebration of Faith, History, and Community
Who Was Saint Arnold of Soissons?
Saint Arnold of Soissons (feast day: August 14th) is the patron saint of brewers, known for his deep faith and his role in promoting beer as a safe alternative to contaminated water. A former soldier turned monk in the 11th century, Arnold founded the Abbey of St. Peter in Oudenburg, where he began brewing beer for the local community and pilgrims. His belief in the power of beer to promote health and bring people together continues to inspire brewers and communities today.
Why We Celebrate Saint Arnold with a Beer Festival
Our annual beer festival is a community event for all (regardless of belief or background). It celebrates the legacy of Saint Arnold by bringing people together to share good cheer and enjoy the rich tradition of brewing. Beer was not just a drink in medieval times—it was a staple of daily life, especially in monasteries where monks brewed for sustenance, hospitality, and as a way to serve the local community. By honoring this tradition, we are continuing the practice of gathering in fellowship, just as Arnold did centuries ago.
The Monastic Brewing Tradition of Valle Crucis
Our festival also honours the nearby monks of Valle Crucis Abbey, who brewed and blessed ale for travelers and pilgrims passing through. Like Saint Arnold, the monks understood that brewing was not just about making beer—it was about providing safety, nourishment, and hospitality. Their ale was more than just refreshment; it was a reflection of their care for the well-being of others.
Celebrating Community and Tradition
Each year, our festival coincides with Saint Arnold’s feast day on August 14th, combining the celebration of faith, brewing, and local culture. We start the festival with a blessing of the beer using a 17th-century prayer, giving thanks for the gift of community, the joy of shared tradition, and the simple pleasures of life. The festival features local craft beers, food, live music, and plenty of family-friendly activities, making it a true celebration for all.
Medieval Churches: A Hub for Community Life
In medieval times, churches and monasteries were central to community life, often serving as places for both spiritual and practical support. Brewing was a common activity in these sacred spaces, where faith and daily life came together. By hosting our beer festival in the church, we are embracing this history of multi-purpose use, where the church was a gathering place not only for worship but for community events.
Enjoy Responsibly
While we celebrate the rich tradition of brewing, we also encourage everyone to drink responsibly and in moderation. This event is about coming together as a community, appreciating the craftsmanship of local brewers, and sharing in fellowship with one another.
Join us on Augsut 14th to celebrate the spirit of Saint Arnold of Soissons – raise a glass of locally crafted beer, enjoy time with friends and family, and experience the enduring connection between faith, brewing, and community!
