What the Project Entails
The reordering of St Collen’s Church will introduce much-needed facilities and improvements, while respecting and preserving the beauty of this historic building. Planned developments include:
- A new toilet facility, making the church more practical and accessible for all.
- A small kitchen/servery area, enabling hospitality at events, community activities, and gatherings.
- Upgraded heating and lighting systems, ensuring comfort and sustainability for both worshippers and visitors.
- Dias/staging, allowing the church to host performances, talks, and cultural events alongside services.
- A new chapel space for quiet contemplation and prayer, offering a peaceful retreat within the heart of the building.
These changes will allow St Collen’s to remain a place of worship while also becoming a more versatile and welcoming venue for the wider community.

Funding the Journey
The early development stages of the Genesis Project have been supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund (HLF). This vital funding has allowed us to carry out planning, designs, and consultations to shape a project that reflects both heritage and community needs.
However, HLF support only provides part of the funding required. The project also depends on match funding, meaning contributions from local fundraising, charitable trusts, donations, and other grant bodies are essential. Every gift, large or small, helps to bring this vision closer to reality.

Listening to the Community
Community voices have been central to the Genesis Project. From surveys to open meetings, we have listened carefully to the needs and hopes of those who use and love St Collen’s.
This feedback has directly influenced the project’s design – from the inclusion of practical facilities like a kitchen and toilets, to the creation of a new chapel space for quiet reflection. The Genesis Project has evolved to reflect what the community has told us matters most.
The result is a project that is not just about preserving a historic building, but about ensuring that St Collen’s continues to serve the people of Llangollen in meaningful and relevant ways for many years to come.

The St Collen’s Church Proposed Improvements
Church Roof and Lighting
The crowning glory of St Collen’s Church is the ceiling of carved oak, featuring amongst other things depictions of the traditional ‘Instruments of the Passion’, the Madonna and Child, angels, monsters and the symbols of the harvest, the corn and the wine. The proposal is to install a complete LED digital lighting system that would save energy and cost and provide improved lighting for the congregation and other visitors. Making the lighting fully programmable would also allow the creation of different sound/light shows that could be used during functions and services, but also to create a unique visitor experience, sequentially highlighting and describing interesting features within the church and the roof.

Gogoniant pennaf Eglwys Sant Collen yw’r nenfwd o dderw cerfiedig, sy’n cynnwys ymhlith pethau eraill bortreadau traddodiadol o ‘Offerynnau’r Dioddefaint’, y Forwyn Fair a’r Plentyn, angylion, angenfilod a symbolau’r cynhaeaf, yr ŷd a’r gwin. Y cynnig yw gosod system oleuo ddigidol LED gyflawn a fyddai’n arbed ynni a chost ac yn darparu goleuadau gwell i’r gynulleidfa ac ymwelwyr eraill. Byddai galluogi rhaglennu’r goleuadau’n gyfan gwbl hefyd yn caniatáu creu gwahanol sioeau sain/golau y gellid eu defnyddio yn ystod swyddogaethau a gwasanaethau, ond hefyd i greu profiad unigryw i ymwelwyr, gan amlygu a disgrifio nodweddion diddorol o fewn yr eglwys a’r to.
Removal of the pews
The pews are to be removed: This would increase space for visitor information and enable after event and service mingling, enjoying refreshments prepared in the new kitchen area. This will increase the scope of possible community uses of the church and help to bring sectors of the community together. The purpose of this proposed work is to create a level, good sized performance area that can be used by choirs, orchestras, bands etc to encourage the use of St Collen’s for these kinds of events. There will be ramp access to the stage on the north side. The stage will act as a performance area as well as an altar platform. The flooring where the pews have been removed will be levelled and stone laid.

Bydd y meinciau’n cael eu tynnu: Byddai hyn yn cynyddu’r lle ar gyfer gwybodaeth i ymwelwyr ac yn galluogi cymdeithasu ar ôl y digwyddiad a’r gwasanaeth, gan fwynhau lluniaeth a baratowyd yn ardal y gegin newydd. Bydd hyn yn cynyddu cwmpas defnyddiau cymunedol posibl yr eglwys ac yn helpu i ddod â sectorau o’r gymuned at ei gilydd. Pwrpas y gwaith arfaethedig hwn yw creu ardal berfformio wastad, o faint da y gellir ei defnyddio gan gorau, cerddorfeydd, bandiau ac ati i annog defnyddio Eglwys Sant Collen ar gyfer y mathau hyn o ddigwyddiadau. Bydd ramp mynediad i’r llwyfan ar yr ochr ogleddol. Bydd y llwyfan yn gweithredu fel ardal berfformio yn ogystal â llwyfan allor. Bydd y llawr lle mae’r meinciau wedi’u tynnu yn cael ei lefelu a bydd cerrig yn cael eu gosod.
Install a disabled toilet
A disabled toilet would be installed in the north end of what is presently the choir vestry. People would then be able to use this, either in services or during functions in the Church, without having to go over to the Church Hall and back. The plan is to install a small fold away kitchen area, at the west end of the north aisle, where the font is presently located. The font would be re-sited in the nave next to the south entrance. Pews in the north aisle would be removed, creating a usable space where people could stand or where chairs and tables could be put out. Having the possibility to make drinks and food items independently of the kitchen in the Church Hall will increase the flexibility of use for both the Church and the Hall and allow different events to be hosted simultaneously.

Yna byddai pobl yn gallu defnyddio hwn, yn ystod gwasanaethau neu yn ystod swyddogaethau yn yr Eglwys, heb orfod mynd draw i Neuadd yr Eglwys ac yn ôl. Y cynllun yw gosod ardal gegin fach, ym mhen gorllewinol yr eil ogleddol, lle mae’r bedyddfaen wedi’i leoli ar hyn o bryd. Byddai’r bedyddfaen yn cael ei ail-leoli yng nghorff yr eglwys wrth ymyl y fynedfa ddeheuol. Byddai meinciau yn yr eil ogleddol yn cael eu tynnu, gan greu lle y gellid ei ddefnyddio i bobl sefyll neu lle gellid gosod cadeiriau a byrddau. Bydd cael y posibilrwydd o wneud diodydd ac eitemau bwyd yn annibynnol o’r gegin yn Neuadd yr Eglwys yn cynyddu hyblygrwydd defnydd yr Eglwys a’r Neuadd ac yn caniatáu cynnal gwahanol ddigwyddiadau ar yr un pryd.
A Labyrinth in the Nave
As part of our ongoing Genesis Project—a vision to reimagine and renew our sacred space for the 21st century—we are excited to share a proposal for a beautiful new feature in the heart of our church: a labyrinth in the nave. This contemplative path offers more than just a striking visual; it invites reflection, prayer, and spiritual exploration. Rooted in ancient Christian tradition, the labyrinth is a symbol of pilgrimage and inward journey, helping us to slow down and reconnect—with God, with ourselves, and with one another.
Introducing a labyrinth into the church space transforms it into a place of movement as well as stillness, offering welcome to those who may not connect through traditional forms of worship. It becomes a gentle and inclusive invitation to people of all backgrounds and beliefs to encounter the sacred in their own way. We believe this addition will enrich the spiritual life of our community and make our church even more open, accessible, and inviting to all who enter.
