Project Update - December 2025

Over the last year, we’ve been working intensively behind the scenes to prepare the Faculty (planning) application and complete the final stage of our major grant submission to the National Lottery Heritage Fund. Although we had a very positive Development Phase, progressing to the Delivery Phase is never guaranteed, every element of the project must be fully justified, costed, and evidenced.

During development, we uncovered some unexpected challenges. Our ambition to upgrade the heating system led to investigations beneath the church floor, which revealed a significant insect infestation in the void. This required additional specialist work, raising project costs and reshaping our plans to ensure that we could still deliver everything to a high standard without compromising outcomes.

Despite these challenges, we are thrilled to announce that our final submission was successful, and that we have been awarded £719,000, more than we originally applied for. This exceptional outcome not only propels us towards meeting our match-funding target, but also demonstrates the confidence that the Heritage Fund has in our vision, our planning, and the lasting impact of the project.

The next step is to await the outcome of our Faculty (planning) application, which will allow us to move forward with delivery.

We’ll share updates as soon as we have news – so watch this space!

St Collen’s Ceiling Conservation Update – We’re Making Real Progress!

Thanks to months of hard work behind the scenes, we are delighted to share that we are now in a position to submit an application to Cadw for 50% of the funds needed to conserve our incredible medieval ceiling.

This is a major milestone for the project and reflects the incredible momentum building around St Collen’s. With Cadw funding covering half of the cost, every donation and event means even more, and we are now making excellent headway with our fundraising target.

Fundraising

St Collen’s Players Fundraisers, bequests, private donations from individuals and families and our beautiful Evening of Song, supported by the Penley Madras Community Choir, which raised funds and awareness in equal measure

Your generosity, creativity, and passion are helping to protect one of Wales’s most significant medieval treasures, and breathe new life into our historic building.

And we’re not slowing down! Saturday 6th December there is an exciting Raise the Roof concert in the Town Hall, another brilliant opportunity to enjoy great music, come together as a community, and help us take another step toward saving the ceiling.

Every ticket sold, every song sung, every penny donated helps us secure the future of this incredible building for generations to come.

Our church and its medieval ceiling is truly a masterpiece, and urgent conservation work will protect its unique carvings, repair extensive damage, and ensure it remains part of the life of St Collen’s and the town for centuries. The reordering will ensure the building is a warm, welcoming space for the community to use.

Thank you to everyone who has supported us so far, whether by donating, attending events, spreading the word, or simply cheering us on. Your enthusiasm makes a real difference.

Let’s keep going, together we can Raise the Roof!
